read moreFew fishing trips can mergethe quiet joy of angling with the sheer thrill of rapid rafting than India-Angling’s tour of the Subansiri river in the northeastern Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh.
To begin with, the pristine sceneryof the Himalayan foothills gets you hooked even before you’ve taken the rods out. Humpbacked mountains sweep the landscape and steep cliffs rise alongside the sandy banks of the Subansiri. The river itself is given to display different moods along its course and is best fished rafting downstream. One moment, you may be trolling in tranquil pools, having all the time in the world on your hands. A few dozen yards downstream, you may find yourself rafting through class III rapids, having your fill of the river adventure. Rest easy in the knowledge that you will be in good hands of our experienced guides whose rafting skills and fishing knowhow is second to none in the area.
The fish to go after in the Subansiri is the Golden Mahseer, aptly nicknamed ‘Tiger of the River’ for its golden scales and predatory prowess. This wily aquatic hunter may elude the angler for hours – at times, days – on end, and the cleverest of casts is more likely to hook up the Golden Mahseer’s docile cousin, the Chocolate Mahseer.
The pools abound with the Chocolates weighing anywhere between 4 pounds and 12 pounds. On a lucky day, you may even reel in a 20 pounder. All this makes for a good warm-up before you move on to the more daunting pursuit of the Golden Mahseer.
Despite being an omnivore who would nibble at almost anything, the Golden Mahseer isn’t easy to tempt. Silver and copper-gold lures when cast deep are most likely to catch this fish’s attention. When hooked, the Golden Mahseer puts up a good fight. It may take off downstream at a pace to strip yards of line in a go. It may then turn about and head upstream or bore itself down into the riverbed to confuse the angler. Any Mahseer weighing upwards of 10 pounds is going to be a challenge to land. And the waters of the Subansiri are known to throw up a 50 pound Golden Mahseer, though nobody is keeping records.
The itinerary of India Angling’s Subansiri fishing tour is drawn to make you fish at the best spots along the river. As the area is remote with hardly any human habitation around, you will overnight in tented camps.
The Subansiri itself may not be the easiest river to fish, but it is a good bet if you want to land a Golden Mahseer. British angling veteran John Edwards, who has devoted 40 years to fishing Mahseer in India and Nepal, gives Subansiri a ten-on-ten for throwing up the Golden Mahseer. And his word is worth the fish’s weight in gold.
