Andamans Fishing Boat

Looking for big-game fishing in the back of beyond? Look no further. India Angling takes you to the last fishing frontier in Asia, the Andaman Islands, where you get to cast in the blue waters of the Indian Oceanand stand a good chance of landing a big one.

Well, just how big is this big one going to be? How about the Giant Trevally, for starters! This apex predator in the top rung of the aquatic food chain can grow up to 80 kg (176lbs) in weight and more than 5feet in length. The average catch can be about half that size, but would still be more than a handful. You may have seen the BBC video of a Giant Trevally lunging out of water, with its big mouth monstrously open to gobble a low-flying bird. If anything, the video gives a good idea of what you’ll be dealing with when you dangle that popper off the fishing boat to lure this silvery devil of the deep. You may need guidance, which will be at hand, thanks to our experienced guides. And you’ll need a lot of pluck and physical strength to haul up this beast. Trust us, the prize is worth the effort.

Rivalling GT’s ferocity, if not surpassing it, is the formidable Barracuda, theother big-game fish of the Andamans. With its elongated, slender body, sharp pointed teeth and erratic predatory behavior given to sudden bursts of top speed, Barracuda is a catch any angler worth his or her salt can be proud of. The adult Barracuda of size 3 to 5 feet can be spotted near the water’s surface close to coral reefs. So you’ve got to keep your line ready and your eye peeled for this hard fighter.

The King Mackerel may not match the enormity of a GT, but is no less intriguing. What it loses in terms of weight, it gains by way of speed. An angler may be caught off guard by this fish’s blistering runs that can empty the spool in a blink. Not for nothing are these fish nicknamed ‘smokers’. Stealth, apart from speed, is the King Mackerel’s weapon, but they are known to fall for a spinner, wobbler or popper. Striking a 10kg or 20kg King Mackerel in Andaman waters is not unusual.

Talking of speed, the Yellow Fin Tuna can probably beat the others to the post. Its body shape, two long fins, and warm muscles (owing to tuna being warm-blooded fish) enable Yellow Fin Tuna to achieve speeds of up to 50 miles per hour. Not to forget that this fish, with its yellow fins and brilliant body colour that changes from metallic blue to silver, is easily the prettier one among its intimidating peers in the Andamans. It can reach the length of 2 meters. A surefire big-game catch that puts up a fight when struck.

When it comes to better looks, the Dog Tooth Tuna throws serious competition at its yellow-finned cousin. Never mind those fearsome canine teeth that lend this fish its name, the shimmering blue-green back, silvery flanks, and white belly make Dog Tooth Tuna a sight to behold. Averaging 40 to 120 cms in length, the doggies aremostly found in reef edges and are best caught using spinning tackles with braided lines. Expect a fierce fight-back from the fish when it takes the bait.

The Andaman waters teem with a variety of other fish like Blue Fin Trevally, Blue Marlin, Black Marlin, Wahoo, Dorado and many more. You get to fish off a boat at different points around the islands. Hardly a day goes by when you don’t pull up a big one out of the deep blue.
