Dibang Weekend Fishing

An Intro about Dibang River and its fishing

Not many anglers who have pursued the Golden/Chocolate Mahseer fish in India can claim to have made a cast in the largely unexplored waters of the remote Dibang River in the northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh.

The river originates in the snow-covered southern flank of the Himalayas, close to the Indo-Chinese border, and flows southwards to meet the mighty Brahmaputra. Along the way, it is fed by as many as a dozen tributaries, big and small. The abundance of water coupled with lack of enough fishing opportunities in the past have made the Dibang river an ideal haunt for the anglers who want to traverse the untraveled territory and fish the unexplored river in search of the peerless Golden Mahseer and its no-less-pretty cousin, the Chocolate Mahseer.

The chase of this ultimate freshwater predator isn’t going to be a walk in the park. We leave the comforts of the tarmac road far behind and drive off the beaten track and hike down the less trodden trails and even raft our way to reach the first point of fishing, the confluence of the Dibang and Asu rivers. It’s the perfect start any adventure-craving angler can ask for. And once you’ve got your rods out and make the cast, the real fun begins.

The bounteous waters of the Dibang are almost certain to land you a Golden Mahseer, but nothing short of a heavy-duty tackle, a clever lure, a sturdy rod,a strong line, and a pair of steady hands, would do the job. Remember, we are talking about the fish that’s called the tiger of the river. To hunt and fight is its nature. Not even a small Mahseer is going to yield without a fair bit of fight. And if you happen to be lucky to hook up a big one, you better hold tight and reel in smart. Each catch is released back in the river.

India Angling is among the very few, if not the pioneer, to open up the Dibang river as the next fishing frontier to anglers. Our experts and local guides know the area well and have identified the best fishing spots along the river. The itinerary includes several full days of fishing, mixed with some leisurely walks inthe mountainous landscape. Unspoiled wilderness stretches on for miles andhuman presence is scarce in these parts. Yet, you will be treated to the best hospitality under the circumstances. Not least, you will be smartly guided to catch the fish of your dreams.
